This week has been exciting! The first thing I did was to try to write the program to recreate the results from Vishabh Goel’s article Building a Simple Machine Learning Model on Breast Cancer Data (Sept. 29, 2018). Thanks to help from Amira, Alonzo, and Derek I was up to the challenge!

We had a remarkably interesting presentation on Tuesday. It was Diversity Training by Christina Crawford. Being an African American woman, I thought I knew what microaggression meant, but her presentation taught me so much more! Not only was it informative, it was interactive as well. We worked in groups and collaborated to deepen our recognition and understanding of microaggression and how to avoid using it. The experience was like one of my mottoes, Learning is Fun!!
Wednesday’s presentation was, Synthetic Photoplethysmographic Waveform at the radial Artery by Mel Boontya-Ananta. The research was first introduced to us in a presentation by Jessica Ramella Romain last week. The research wants to develop wearable devices for the point of service for the under-served to detect/ keep track of changes in the cardiac cycle of people who are diagnosed with or in danger of being diagnosed with a coronary event or disease. One of the standouts for me is how they are trying to solve the problems his research has with getting accurate readings from darker skin tones and/or obesity. The other standout was the math of it. It was interesting and explained the very cool graphical information Jessica showed us.

Well, that’s it for week 3! Just thinking and researching for my presentation. Now it seems that time is speeding up!
