Last week :(…

Reflection

This last week I focused on self-reflection. I felt these last five weeks as a positive working experience. I often wondered how scientist and medical personnel can monitor glucose levels in the blood and how a small compact device could do the same in seconds instead of days. I learned research is the key to such discoveries. I learned that as a teacher I can do research to better explain the students “why do we have to know this?” question. I also learned other things along the way.

Research

I learned the how to find information is just as important as the why to look for information. During my experiment, I started with a tutorial on how to detect malaria in a blood smear. My job was to use a computer learning model to detect the infected cell. While I am not a doctor or a trained medical technician, I was able to follow the tutorial to use machine learning to detect an infected cell of malaria in a sample of blood. I then used this information to make a research poster for my presentation.

Lesson Plan

Derek Howard and I will create a project that will consist of a maker challenge. The objective is using a microbit, battery pack, and an ace bandage, we will build and program a pushup counter to promote health and fitness. The challenge in this is that the microbit will count the student’s repetitions. The student will have to know what an accelerometer does and how to use it in the program. The student will learn how gravity is measured and how to use the accelerometer to detect the movement on the microbit which is attached to the student by the ace bandage. Once we have finished the lesson plan, we plan to publish it in Teach Engineering.

Conclusion

Overall, I would recommend this experience to teachers. I learned online collaboration can be accomplished with patience and respect towards one another. While this is my last blog post I feel that I could accomplished more about machine learning than I would in a semester long course on machine learning. Finally, I like to thank my cohort by making this experience interesting and fun.
